The name Sointula means " place of harmony", which perfectly captured the utopian ambitions the early community envisioned.
Seeking to escape the hardships of life working in mines run by the Dunsmuir family out of Nanaimo, a group of Finnish miners founded the village in 1901. While tragedies and financial struggles derailed the miners' ambitions, the essence of their vision still lives on in present day Sointula. The serene beach views of Malcolm Island, the numerous hiking and biking trails, the wildlife, sea life, and the friendly local residents, many of whom are descendants of the early community, provide a peaceful getaway for those seeking to escape.
We love to see new faces here on Malcolm Island, so take an adventure and come enjoy our quiet, safe, and beautiful island that is filled with activities to enjoy solo, as a couple, or the whole family!
Due to covid, we have had to temporarily close our pub, however, we have adapted to the times and built our very own walk up window! Open for lunch and dinner with a new menu item posted each day for lunch and dinner on our facebook page! Open 11:30am-1:30pm/5-8pm

Home to the world's only known whale rubbing beach. Orcas are known to occasionally visit the area and rub themselves on the pebbles, mere feet from shore!

Take a walk down 1st street and visit the beautiful sites of Dickson Point, also known by locals as "graveyard point ".

Located just 250 meters from our front steps, the ferry terminal is an easy access point for our guests!
This little one calls right our beach their home! You will often see them hunting for crab and bouncing along the logs from your balcony views! Our island features so much wildlife and sealife to see! From eagles, to minks, dolphins, whales, sea lions, and more, it's never a dull sight!
